PROJECT OVERVIEW

Under the expert leadership of Project Manager Alan Byrne, the Pathology Laboratory at Edinburgh Western General Hospital underwent a full interior refurbishment. The project modernised the laboratory environment to meet current clinical pathology standards, improving workflow efficiency, safety, and infection control. The refurbishment combined advanced infrastructure upgrades with bespoke laboratory solutions to create a modern, HTM/HBN-compliant workspace tailored to the hospital’s operational needs.

SCOPE OF WORK

Heating and Cooling Systems – Installed state-of-the-art air conditioning to maintain stable temperatures critical for sensitive diagnostic processes and specimen preservation.

Electrical Power Upgrade – Converted to a 3-phase power distribution system to support high-demand laboratory equipment, enhancing reliability and safety.

LED Lighting Scheme – Implemented energy-efficient LED lighting to improve visibility, reduce energy costs, and create a productive working environment.

Suspended Ceilings & Stud Walls – Installed to optimise space, improve acoustics, and integrate essential utilities, delivering a functional, ergonomic layout.

Bespoke Laboratory Benching – Supplied and fitted custom Trespa benching with under-counter storage to enhance workflow efficiency, organisation, and hygiene.

30-Minute Fire Doors & Frames – Upgraded all doors to fire-rated specifications, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Laboratory-Grade Vinyl Flooring – Installed resilient, slip-resistant flooring designed to withstand chemical exposure and heavy foot traffic, facilitating safe, easy maintenance.

Plumbing & Drainage Systems – Engineered to meet the specific requirements of pathology analysers, supporting efficient waste management and infection control.

HTM-Compliant IPS Wash Stations – Integrated at strategic points to promote hygiene and compliance with regulatory standards.

OUTCOME

The refurbishment delivered a fully modern, HTM/HBN-compliant pathology laboratory, combining efficiency, safety, and workflow optimisation. The bespoke benching and storage solutions have significantly improved staff productivity, while upgraded HVAC, electrical, and lighting systems support high-precision diagnostic work. Safety enhancements, including fire-rated doors and laboratory-grade flooring, alongside infection control measures, have created a secure environment for staff and patients alike.
